The Roots - “The Seed (2.0) ft. Cody ChesnuTT”
Haven’t heard this in a long time.
Cypress Hill - “Insane in the Brain”
Jurassic 5 - “Quality Control”
It’s been a while since I listened to this.
I’m not a fan of all the Odd Future releases but I’ve generally enjoyed the stuff that Tyler has come up with it. I haven’t been much of a hip-hop fan over the past decade or so and OFWGKTA is the most interesting thing that has happened to hip-hop in a long time.
I honestly couldn’t relate much to most hip-hop since it became more about the bling and the partying in the late 90’s. I’ve always liked the grittier and more honest side of hip-hop and Tyler and some of the other OFWGKTA releases have been some of the most honest music I’ve heard in years, which is odd since many of the things that they rap about aren’t real at all. The raw emotions and the displaced anger are very real though and I think that’s something that I love from this Odd Future.
I also like the fact that they carved out an entirely new DIY path for future generations to follow. They pretty much built their empire of freaking Tumblr for god’s sake and that’s something that I do find inspiring. What they did was more punk than anything I’ve heard from any punk band in recent years.
Plus Tyler and the rest of Odd Future has been one of the most polarizing groups in hip-hop recently. Though they’ve gotten a lot of praise for what they’ve done, the misogynistic and violent nature of their lyrics have been criticized by certain people. I completely get the argument that they do make but I have always believed that this kind of expression does have it’s place especially when it’s framed the way Tyler does it. I see it more as a snapshot of the pervading culture in the way gangster rap was for the 90’s and punk and hardcore was for the late 70’s and early 80’s. This isn’t the first time that hip hop was accused of these things anyway. Remember Amerikkka’s Most Wanted? Now Cube stars in family oriented movies. Do people even remember how much of an obnoxious bunch of assholes the Beastie Boys were in the 80’s? Less than a decade after they were being chased out of the UK for being such jerks, they were model citizens helping organizing concerts that petitioned for the freeing of Tibet. People forget that these artists grow up. People also forget that their audiences grow up along with them.
Tyler perfectly captures what happens in the head of a confused and insecure person of that age. His language reflects whatever he’s going through. I can relate to what he raps about because I’ve been there. Everyone has a darker side to them and while the violence isn’t something to be proud of, I haven’t ever killed a cop because Ice-T told me to nor have I butchered anyone after listening to Cannibal Corpse. More than anything, listening to violent or darker music made me not feel like a freak and made me me more secure about myself in the long run.
After all that, I realize that I’m not really sure if I answered your question. LOL. I shouldn’t blog when I’ve had a bit to drink. But yeah. I like Goblin. It’s a bit too long though and I still like Bastard a lot better.
